R - stability (R) is the ability of a building element to maintain its mechanical strength under the action of fire;
E - airtightness (E) is the ability of a building element to prevent the passage (or production) of flames, vapours, or hot gases from the exposed side to the unexposed side;
I - insulation (I) is the ability of the building element to reduce, within certain limits, the transmission of heat.
The fire resistance value EI in units of time (minutes) and represents the time below which the building element can maintain and guarantee its stability, airtightness, and thermal insulation capabilities. For the classification of non-bearing elements (partition walls and suspended ceilings), the criterion R is automatically met if the criteria E and I are met.

The fire resistance is defined as:
" ... the ability of a building element – be it a component or a structure – to maintain, according to a predetermined thermal program and for a certain period of time, stability (indicated by the symbol R), airtightness (indicated by the symbol E), and thermal insulation (indicated by the symbol I) ”.
